Mechanical ventilation system

The LEITAT 1 mechanical ventilation system is a device designed to keep in vital support the patient in a situation of severe respiratory failure who requires intubation and invasive mechanical ventilation. It should not be considered as a partial ventilatory support system (non-invasive mechanical ventilation – NIMV) in patients who ventilate spontaneously. It is not a therapy, it is a support intervention, a medical device for ventilatory and temporary support therapy that ventilates the patient while correcting the originating problem. The device as a whole allows to apply a mandatory ventilation mode with a programmable volume to a patient through the mechanical actuation of a conventional resuscitation balloon system (AMBU).

This equipment is used in the context of a clinical study approved by the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS).

The device as a whole allows a regulated amount of air/min to be delivered in a mandatory ventilation mode to a patient by means of the mechanical activation of a conventional AMBU system.

Physiological objectives:

  • Maintain, normalize or manipulate the gas exchange:
  • Provide adequate alveolar ventilation
  • Improve arterial oxygenation
  • Increase lung volume:
  • Open and distend the airway and the alveolar units
  • Increase functional residual capacity, preventing alveolar collapse
  • Reduce respiratory work:
  • Ventilatory muscles unloading
Clinical objectives:
  • Reverse hipoxemia
  • Correct respiratory acidosis
  • Relieve dyspnea and respiratory distress
  • Prevent or resolve atelectasis
  • Reverse fatigue of respiratory muscles
  • Allow sedation and neuromuscular block
  • Decrease the systemic or myocardial oxygen consumption
  • Reduce intracranial pressure
  • Stabilize the chest wall
